A Terrible Revelation

Sammy woke up the next morning. The day was particularly bright, with sunlight and shadows dancing through the tree outside her window to create shifting patterns on her ceiling. She watched the display sleepily for a while, reflecting on the events of the previous evening.

When she’d told Rob she would keep Sunny Cove Services open for a little while, she’d originally been thinking she would stay another hour. But when it came down to it, it had been almost impossible for Sammy to send anyone out into the cold. The young, poor families who’d come in for a free meal had long departed to their shabby apartments and rental houses, their children sleepy from finally eating their fill. Many of the volunteers had drifted off to their mainstream lives, feeling good about the work they’d done that night. But Cliff and the others were another matter, and it wasn’t until Jones reminded her that she wasn’t running a homeless shelter yet that she finally announced they would be locking up.

She’d expected someone to get angry with her for kicking them out, but the only thing they showed was gratitude. Cliff and Judy hugged her multiple times, telling her again how grateful they were for the effort and how nice it was to see their friends warm, dry, and fed for the evening. Sammy had nearly cried then, feeling so moved she could hardly contain it.

Sheriff Jones assured Sammy that he and his deputies would make sure the homeless folks would be taken wherever in town they wanted instead of simply kicked out. A few of them accepted a ride, but others were content to walk.

When the building had cleared out, Sammy had suddenly realized just how tired she was. It was already getting close to midnight, and she still had a bunch of equipment from Just Like Grandma’s to load up and take back. She had decided it could wait until morning, drove home, and fallen into bed.

Now, she stretched under the covers, curling her toes and feeling incredibly grateful for her bed. Sammy took a moment to assess her life, thanking God for every tiny thing she’d always taken for granted. The covers on her bed, the comfortable mattress, even her slippers that kept her feet off the cold wooden floor were something to enjoy. She hauled herself out of bed, feeling incredibly lucky for a hot shower and soap and then for a cup of coffee and a bagel. These were such minor conveniences, and it seemed to her that everyone deserved them. She spared a moment to say a prayer for anyone who hadn’t gotten to sleep in a warm bed.

Having gotten ready for the day, Sammy headed downstairs and outside to make the short drive to Sunny Cove Services. She’d already scheduled the day off of work, and that gave her ample time to finish cleaning up.

Unlocking the door and seeing the mess that awaited her, Sammy had to smile. She really didn’t care that all the trash cans were full and the tables needed a good wipe down.
